Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) December 05, 2012
Drexel University Online, a premier provider of Internet-based higher education, today announced its sponsorship of the exclusive Philadelphia premiere of the new documentary “NURSES If Florence Could See Us Now,” set to take place on Friday, December 7, 2012 at The Prince Theater.
The feature-length documentary showcases the complex and challenging world of nursing. More than 100 nurses across nine states were interviewed to represent the many different roles nurses play in our society.
“NURSES is authentic and real,” said documentary film-maker Kathy Douglas, RN, MHA. “There was no scripting or prepping. We showed up with a camera crew and did candid conversations.”
The original idea for the film was developed by Douglas, who serves as chief nursing officer at API Healthcare and president of On Nursing Excellence (ONE), a not-for-profit organization founded to expand the effectiveness, efficiency, well-being and recognition of the healthcare workforce. The inspiration for the film was driven by Douglas’ belief that a deeper understanding of the role and value of nursing among policymakers and the public will help form a successful future for healthcare in this country. Douglas explained the film’s title acknowledges the role Florence Nightingale played in the development of modern nursing.
“Florence would love the fact that nursing is prominently at the table and often taking the lead in transforming healthcare systems to meet the real needs of patients, families and communities,” said Dr. Gloria Donnelly, RN, FAAN, dean of Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions. “Florence legitimized nursing as a profession, and nurses today are legitimizing our leadership role in transforming healthcare.”
According to the American Nurses Association, there are more than 3.1 million registered nurses in the United States. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration cites there are 136,876 registered nurses in Pennsylvania. The documentary features several nurses from the Philadelphia region, showcasing the significance of nursing in the local area.
“Drexel is thrilled to be a part of the Philadelphia premiere of NURSES,” said Wendy Wiesmiller, senior program director at Drexel University Online. “Nurses play such a significant role in people’s lives. As demand in the field continues to grow, we look forward to supporting nurses through higher education as they secure leadership roles.”
“NURSES If Florence Could See Us Now” is dedicated to nurses everywhere for the extraordinary work they do every day and in memory of Joyce C. Clifford, PhD, RN, FAAN for her numerous contributions to the profession.
“On Nursing Excellence is most grateful to Drexel University Online for bringing this film to Philadelphia,” said local resident Karen K. Kirby, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, FACHE, executive producer of NURSES. “It clearly demonstrates Drexel’s commitment to honoring nurses and the nursing profession within Philadelphia and beyond. I can’t thank Drexel enough for helping me and our ONE film team honor these incredible nurses who helped make the film possible and all nurses who care for the sick and most vulnerable in our beautiful city every day.”
