Cintas’ Detroit Fire Protection location offers these tips to help your family avoid a Christmas tree related fire this holiday season.

A live Christmas tree is a great way to show holiday spirit and bring any family together. However, there are some important considerations to make when selecting, placing and decorating your tree for the season. Cintas’ Detroit Fire Protection location offers these tips to help your family avoid a Christmas tree related fire this holiday season.
Justin Rand, General Manager of Cintas Fire Protection’s Detroit location, had the following comment:
“At Cintas, we focus not only on the compliance and functionality of commercial fire protection systems, but also the safety of our employee partners and customers outside of the workplace. The holiday season is a perfect time to remember the significance of home safety and fire protection.”
Choosing your Tree
When selecting a live Christmas tree, it is important that you choose a tree that is not too dry– dry trees are far more likely to catch fire than properly hydrated trees. Make sure you pick one with green needles that do not easily fall off. Bounce the base of your tree on the ground to test– if many needles fall off, it is too dry. The base of the tree should feel moist and sappy, and water should be added to the base daily to prevent it from drying out too quickly.
Bringing your Tree Home
After you have picked the perfect tree, make sure you place it in a spot that is clear of any fire hazards. The tree should be a safe distance from any source of heat, such as fireplaces, space heaters, heat vents, candles or any other hot surface. Close proximity to sources of heat can dry the tree, making it more likely to ignite. The tree should not block an entrance or exit to your home, so that evacuation is not impeded in the event of a fire.
Decorating your Tree
When lighting your tree, make sure that you have selected the proper type of lights– some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. Inspect the lights for loose bulbs, worn wiring or other physical damage and do not use them if damage is present. Never use lit candles or open flames to decorate your tree. Make sure that you turn off your lights when you are going to be away from the tree for an extended period and before you go to bed.
Proper Disposal
When your tree begins dropping needles, it is time to dispose of it. Many Detroit area communities have recycling programs specifically for Christmas trees that will dispose of your tree in a safe and environmentally friendly way.
