The average ticket price for the 2013 Orange Bowl is down exactly 50 percent from last year's game on secondary ticket site Ticket Liquidator.

When you have schools with a less-fervent fan base in a BCS game you will see demand for tickets drop

The average price for tickets to the 2013 Orange Bowl® are down exactly 50 percent, to an average of $64*, from the price customers paid for last year’s game on secondary ticket site Ticket Liquidator. Part of the reason prices are down so dramatically is because Northern Illinois, the Mid-American Conference Champion, was selected to play in the Bowl Championship Series® (BCS) Bowl.

The NIU Huskies will play the ACC Champion Florida State Florida State Seminoles at Sun Life Stadium® in Miami on New Year’s Day. Ticket Prices for the 2013 Orange Bowl® are selling for an average of $64 through Ticket Liquidator, while tickets for last year’s matchup between the Clemson Tigers and West Virginia Mountaineers sold for an average of $128.

“When you have schools with a less-fervent fan base in a BCS game you will see demand for tickets drop,” says Andrés Hidalgo, media relations, Ticket Liquidator. “We remember a similar scenario in 2011, when our hometown UConn Huskies played in the Fiesta Bowl®.”

Don’t shed a tear for ticket resellers however, as tickets for the 2013 BCS Championship Game, featuring Notre Dame vs. Alabama are seeing an average ticket price of more than $1,000. Tickets for the Rose Bowl® between Stanford and Wisconsin are averaging $350, while the Cotton Bowl® matchup between Texas A&M and Oklahoma commands the third highest average ticket price at $281.

NIU, who repeats as MAC champion, becomes the first school from the MAC to make a BCS Bowl. BCS rules required the NIU Huskies be included in the BCS mix because of a combination of two rules. One rule states a conference cannot send more than two schools to a BCS Game, eliminating a number of SEC teams from being considered, despite being ranked higher. Another rule stipulates a team that finishes in the top 16 BCS rankings from one of the “non-automatic” conferences will be invited provided they finish with a higher ranking than the champions from automatically qualifying conferences.
