Atlanta LASIK Surgeon Trevor Woodhams Explains Flex Spending Changes in 2013

Changes to IRS Flex Spending Accounts in 2013 could have major impacts on the volume of LASIK surgeries in Atlanta and around the United States.

The IRS is making some changes to the Flex Spending options in 2013, which according to Atlanta LASIK surgeon, Dr. Trevor Woodhams, could significantly reduce access to the very popular LASIK procedure in 2013. Starting January 1st, there will be a max of $2,500 that can be allocated into Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA.) In the past, there was no cap on FSA’s, although most employers set caps of $5,000. This change could potentially mean less people will have the budget for elective surgeries like LASIK.

Dr. Woodhams says since the average cost of LASIK is close to $5,000, and many people take advantage of an FSA to pay for their procedures, it could decrease the overall LASIK surgeries in Atlanta, as well as the rest of the country.

FSA’s allow people to set aside money tax-free that can be used to pay for out-of-pocket expenses, such as co-payments, prescriptions, and various non-insurance covered elective and cosmetic procedures. A full list of qualified expenses can be found at the Internal Revenue Service website.

“Because of the decreased IRS Flexible Spending Account maximum of $2500 starting this year, fewer patients now and in the future will be able to pay for LASIK - or other elective medical expenses - using pre-tax dollars,” said Dr. Trevor Woodhams, founder of Atlanta’s Woodhams Eye Clinic.

Dr. Woodhams founded Woodhams Eye Clinic in 1983. He performs hundreds of LASIK, PreLex™, and lens implant procedures each year. Dr. Woodhams is a former Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Emory University and is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and a Fellow in the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
