One of the most difficult things about any abuse case is that the victims are afraid to speak up.

Two adolescent girls molested by their middle school band director have been offered cash settlements by the Palm Beach County School Board. The girls, who were molested in separate incidents in 2009, have been offered $150,000 each reported the Palm Beach Post.
$91,000 of each settlement would go to the victims and their families and the rest would cover their legal and medical costs. One girl has already accepted the settlement, according to court papers filed in November. Court case number: 9401719 according to the Palm Beach Post.
Gary Iscoe, a Florida personal injury lawyer whose firm represents abuse victims, says the settlements should be a source of hope for other victims.
“One of the most difficult things about any abuse case is that the victims are afraid to speak up,” Iscoe said. “Sometimes they feel guilty about the abuse. Often they think no one will listen, or nothing will come of it. This case proves otherwise.”
Iscoe says that anytime someone is a victim of abuse, their abuser is liable for compensation.
“The pain that comes out of abuse is long-lasting,” Iscoe said. “It can leave medical bills, both physical and psychological, as well as years of grief. Sexual abuse changes lives. Financial settlements can't reverse that, but they can help the victim move forward.”
Heath Miller, the teacher who molested the girls, pleaded guilty to touching two students and having sex with two others. Miller is currently serving a 13-year prison sentence reported WPTV.
“I hope that victims of other abusers see this and decide to step forward and take action of their own,” Iscoe said. “Sometimes justice really does prevail.”
