The North County Times featured an article that discusses the San Marcos School District working with a local farmer to encourage healthy eating. Organic market community, Colle, issues a statement.

On December 17, 2012, Colle responds to an article featured on the North County Times website that discusses an initiative to get students to eat healthy.

The North County Times article outlines San Marcos School District’s plan to infuse locally grown produce into the meals that students are offered at school. The article states that using local produce is a means to encourage students to eat food that is both nutritious and healthy. Furthermore, it is suggested that San Marcos endorses the National School Lunch Program’s pillar for the mandatory selection of a fruit or vegetable when purchasing food at school. This guideline is meant to balance a student’s meal and begin the formation of healthy habits.

One of the local farmers markets assists the school district by making visits to the elementary school. These visits are aimed at educating students about how locally grown produce finds its way to them during meal time. Another goal driving the initiative is to inform students about the fruits and vegetables they eat. For example, the article explains how students were told about the benefits of specific fruits and vegetables. The vitamins and nutrients contained in them would support a particular function of the body.

Benefits beyond healthier youth were also identified. The article mentions programs that integrate local farmers markets into school to help local agricultural businesses. Visits to schools and the push for students to engage in healthy eating promote agricultural businesses locally and give farmers a regular customer base.

Online farmers market, Colle, responded to the article by saying the following, “A program that increases awareness of healthy eating among the youngest generations is invaluable. The education the students receive about their food is a great opportunity.”

Local agrarians facilitate the San Marcos School District’s objective in educating students and providing opportunity for a healthy diet. In return, neighboring farmers receive assistance that allows their businesses to continue.

Colle is an E-Commerce enabled farmers market community that is passionate about sustainable consumption and responsible conservation.
