Joplin, Mo.-based recruiting firm Computer Careers recently began offering contract-to-direct placements as another way to solve its clients staffing challenges.
Computer Careers was established in 1988 and focuses on the placement of Information Technology professionals. However, they are not limited to IT placements, said President Larry Baker, who purchased the firm in 1999.
“The name says Computer Careers and denotes an IT specialty, but we can certainly provide candidates in various specialties to meet whatever staffing needs client companies may have,” Baker said. “The way we approach it is we try to build relationships with client companies. The contract-to-direct services were added as another way to meet those needs. Client companies obviously enjoy these types of arrangements because they can “try-before-they-buy,” a concept that has become popular in today’s business environment where companies are increasingly more selective about the individuals they hire. Baker also says that client companies like the ability to spread the recruiting fee out over the course of the contract rather than having to pay it in one lump sum.
One of the unique aspects of utilizing Computer Careers’ contract-to-direct services is that the firm does not charge the traditional conversion fee. Rather than charging the full conversion fee when the company hires the candidate directly, the firm provides client companies a credit on the amount that was earned over the length of the contract period.
Contract-to-direct placements, also referred to as temp-to-perm placements, are also beneficial to candidates, Baker said. For those who are unemployed, it allows them to get back to work more quickly because companies tend to move on faster on lower risk contract placements than they do direct hires that require more commitment. It also reduces the risk for the candidates who may need to consider positions away from their current locations.
“This gives them the opportunity to see if it will really be a good fit for them and a place where they want to relocate their family,” Baker said. “They have a feeling three or four months into the assignment if this is definitely going to work before they make the commitment to move their family.”
