We are a small, close knit company, and we are also very, very responsive because when our clients need us, they need us to be there. We are always available.

EKS Services CEO Clarence E. Carpenter III says his employees were the key to his firm winning honors in the Minority Supplier of the Year/Class II “Stars of Diversity” competition, sponsored by the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council.
“The employees are this company. They make this company. They are the ones interfacing and interacting with the clients every day, so any success we have is due totally to them.”
That’s how EKS Services CEO Clarence E. Carpenter III answered when asked how his company was able to win honors as Minority Supplier of the Year/Class II in the “Stars of Diversity” competition, sponsored for the 29th year in October by the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council.
More than 700 business leaders attended the event, held at the Detroit Institute of Arts, to celebrate their achievements in producing more than $16 billion in contracts between corporations and minority businesses.
Carpenter said his 11 employees at the leading environmental services consulting firm are there 24/7 for clients, respond immediately to client needs, and develop strong relationships with clients that last for years.
After working his way up through the ranks to a management position at Testing Engineers and Consultants, Carpenter founded EKS Services Inc. in 2000 in his home. Later as the firm grew, the first EKS offices were in the new center area of Detroit near the Fisher Building. Today, the company has its national headquarters in Southwest Detroit near Old Tigers Stadium.
The winning culture he instilled in the firm includes being action oriented, client-focused, keeping a sharp eye on quality service delivery, ethics and honesty, integrity and delivering on promises.
“And, we are big on communication, both internal and external. We are always communicating among ourselves and with our clients,” said Carpenter, who is married and has four children. “We are a small, close knit company, and we are also very, very responsive because when our clients need us, they need us to be there. We are always available.
“When you have good communication and good employees, I think your clients are able to see that, especially when there is interaction out in the field. Our employees are well trained, they care and they are excited.”
All of those traits are important, but winning the Minority Supplier of the Year Award for the second time since 2006 also requires having a stellar reputation in the industry that results in being nominated for the award. And, competition is tough, Carpenter acknowledged.
EKS serves the Midwest and is expanding nationally through its work with McDonalds Corporation and General Motors Real Estate Division, as well as other large corporations.
“The MMSDC is consistently impressed by the work of our corporate members and minority business enterprises,” said Louis Green, MMSDC President and CEO. “This year’s winners have gone above and beyond to distinguish themselves as champions and leaders of supplier diversity. They have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to multicultural business partnerships that produce positive economic results across our workplaces, communities and households.”
What piece of valuable advice would Carpenter offer to other business owners? He’s quick to answer: “The client is always right. You always take care of the client.”
