Following an article published by The Washington Post discussing the popularity and possibilities of winter bike commutes, Linus Bike offers support.

On December 11, Linus Bike, a commuter bike manufacturer, commends an article published by The Washington Post which highlights the cyclists who commute even in the harsh winter months.

[The Washington Post article quotes cyclist Chris Eatough of Bike Arlington who stated, “In countries that have a very strong bike culture, they don’t think of it as recreational or a pastime or seasonal — it’s something you do to get from A to B. It’s how you get around.” Eatough continues, “In Copenhagen, one of the top bike cities in the world, they have kind of crummy weather year around, and in winter it snows and it rains and it’s cold, but in Denmark that’s how most people get around. It’s part of your lifestyle.”
In the article, cyclist George Branyan admits that the cold winter months are his favorite for cycling. In addition, The Washington Post reports that within the past twenty years, cycling has increased by more than 60 percent and “more than half of cyclists reportedly are using bikes for transportation rather than recreation.”

Jason Latty, a representative of commuter bike manufacturer Linus Bike, applauds the informative article. “The encouragement of cycling in the winter is inspiring. Even if a person is an avid cyclist, oftentimes the idea of cycling in the chilly winter conditions is off-putting,” explains Latty. “However, the article confirms that cycling in the winter can be just as, if not more, enjoyable as it is during other seasons.”

In the article, winter cyclists admit that they must adjust their cycling gear to battle the cold winds. According to the article, “In the wintertime, [Elizabeth MacGregor] abandons her bike shoes, which clip onto the pedals, and screws on a pair of platform pedals so she can wear warm ‘street boots.’” Wool caps and rain-proof vests are other ways to battle the elements, the article reports. The article also states that due to shorter daylight in the winter, it’s important ride slowly and safely.
