Celebrate Christmas and help sustain treasured national lands.

For the first time in the history of the U.S. Forest Service, citizens now have the ability to purchase a Christmas Tree Permit online. The Forest Service, in cooperation with Kinsail Corporation, has made Christmas tree permits available online - enabling citizens and visitors to conveniently secure Christmas tree permits and enjoy the diversity and grandeur of the Black Hills National Forest this holiday season. These permits present the perfect opportunity for individuals and families to experience the great outdoors while directly supporting the National Forests.

Purchasing is easy. Simply visit to purchase a permit and it is shipped directly to the address provided. Even better, the $10 fee per permit is put directly to use in the local Forest Service locations allowing for repair, maintenance and enhancement of local recreation facilities and to provide enhanced visitor information services. The nominal fees from programs like the Christmas tree permit are one of the many ways the Forest Service maintains and provides for the land we treasure so dearly.

The tree types that are available for customers include: Ponderosa Pine, a tree noted for its full shape and long, graceful needles that is found in multiple places in the Hills. Spruce tree is a popular holiday tree that grows at higher elevations and have a classic tapered form, and its short needles allow for easy stringing of lights and ornaments. Juniper tree, noted for its full shape and beautiful blue-green hue, is also available and found within the Forest.

While the permit allows the harvesting of a Christmas tree, a few simple rules and guidelines must be followed when selecting and cutting a tree. Each permit is accompanied by a handout with guidance about appropriate tree removal addressing where and how to cut a tree and what type of trees can be selected.

Kinsail and the U.S. Forest Service encourage citizens and families to take the spirit of the holidays outside this year and bring home a Christmas tree from a local National Forest. From Western South Dakota to northeast Wyoming, enjoy a Christmas tree while supporting the U.S. Forest Service.
