On December 17, city bike manufacturer Linus Bike offers encouragement following an article published by Mike Dowd on StreetsBlog.org concerning his efforts to promote bicycle advocacy in youths.
Mike Dowd, of StreetsBlog.org, attempted to put together a bicycle advocacy group together at Midwood High School where he teaches. Dowd explains, “My hopes weren’t high, as I had never noticed much interest in cycling among our students. But I was quite mistaken. Not only has the club continued to exist, but the enthusiasm it has generated has changed my thinking about how to create a more bike-friendly city. I now believe that promoting youth cycling is a crucial missing component in the movement for livable streets.” Dowd goes on to state that the growing group began to take advantage of Bike New York, which provided free after-school riding lessons. Dowd admits his joy when one young member declared, “I’m so glad I joined this club. I haven’t felt this happy in years!”
China Reevers, a cycling advocate and representative for Linus Bike, commends the efforts of Mr. Dowd. “As a city bike manufacturer, Linus Bike creates bikes with health and environmental benefits in mind. By promoting cycling to these youths, Mr. Dowd is instilling the belief that cycling is fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly. That is a lesson that these kids will take with them for the rest of their lives.”
“I now realize there is a huge latent demand for cycling among young people. If advocates can figure out how to meet this demand, the movement for safer streets will have much broader support,” explains Dowd.
Reevers goes on to state that Linus Bike applauds the efforts of the Brooklyn teacher. His inspiring lesson in bicycle advocacy will surely benefit both the environment and the advocates in his popular cycling group.
