The recent Los Angeles Auto Show unveiled some fascinating and potentially life-saving new innovations. The attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen LLP respond.

The California car accident attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen have dedicated years to defending individuals and families who have suffered as a result of automobile accidents, and are always looking for new innovations that might make the roads safer. California has the highest automobile accident rate in the nation, and every year, there are far too many fatalities. For example, in 2006, California saw 799 fatal automobile accidents.

Since that time, rates have only increased, and quite dramatically. The California Highway Patrol reports that in 2010, there were 2,739 traffic-related fatalities in California, and more than 200,000 injuries.

Each year, car manufacturers propose new and innovative ways in which the roads might be made safer. For instance, recent innovations have included the ability for vehicles to detect when they venture too closely to other automobiles, and some of these vehicles even contain an automatic braking mechanism to prevent tragedy before it strikes.

At the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, car manufacturers unveiled new features that hope to reduce the number of personal injuries and fatalities among drivers as well as pedestrians. For instance, new collision avoidance systems go further than ever before in detecting dangers on the road, and alerting drivers with the use of lights and alarms.

Other innovations include emergency brake assist, which provides maximum breaking power during a sudden stop. The system detects a vehicle’s speed and automatically applies the maximum amount of force required to stop the vehicle in an emergency situation. Additionally, adaptive headlights make it easier to see at night, because they adjust around corners, rather than simply pointing straight ahead.

Perhaps one of the most interesting innovations is the pedestrian airbag. The new Volvo V40 actually features exterior airbags, designed to minimize injury to pedestrians who are hit by a moving vehicle. The vehicle’s sensors can actually detect a pedestrian’s legs at the front of the vehicle, and then deploy the appropriate airbag accordingly.

The attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen are encouraged by any technological innovations that may make the roads safer. While only time will tell of the impact of these new innovations, many of these forward-thinking ideas show great promise. As more Californians adopt newer vehicles with enhanced safety features, the attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen will continue to monitor the impact on road safety and crash statistics.
