One of the reasons people love BuildMaster is because we do so many releases and extensions. This puts new functionality in their hands when they need it. Having a solid process in allows us to do this and still keep sane.

Inedo, creators of BuildMaster and ProGet, are releasing a new white paper, Release Management Done Right. The paper outlines the challenges that are presented when managing release processes, and offers several solutions to those common issues.

Continuous integration is rapidly becoming a standard for software development. This change can be attributed to the popularity of agile methodologies such as SCRUM and Extreme Programing, Agile Development, and more recently DevOps. As modern software companies change their infrastructure, they need to embrace new techniques. Inedo brings their experience to bear by outlining and detailing a tried and true methodology to help smooth this transition.

Alex Papadimoulis, Founder and President of Inedo, is excited to share Inedo’s release management philosophies.

“By developing BuildMaster and helping our clients with their implementation strategies,” Alex said, “we get a singularly broad view of the release management process. While we are working closely with our customers to create their release strategies, we still have to be working on and maintaining our own plan. The specifics of each strategy change, but over the course of developing these plans several fundamentals reveal themselves. Recognizing these basics and using them to create a winning release process is huge strategic advantage.

“One of the reasons people love BuildMaster is because we do so many releases and extensions. This puts new functionality in their hands when they need it. Having a solid process in allows us to do this and still keep sane.”

The tools used to organize a release range from the simple to the complex, but whatever tool is used: whiteboards, spreadsheets, or release management platforms, Release Management Done Right identifies and confronts the problem areas of managing those releases as parts of process. The paper defines several keystones in creating a proper process:

  •     Strict definitional accuracy
  •     Build immutability and completeness
  •     Sound testing
  •     Tiered project deployment

Following this conceit, Release Management Done Right serves as a guideline for companies and projects of any size, using any tools. It holds that the real result of proper practices is developers spending more time on developing.

“A little bit of process will go a long way to solve a multitude of problems,” Alex continues, “establishing a release management system that is in line with these principles will minimize the logistical errors and setbacks that your team experiences and, at the end of the day, let you get back to development.”
