Two of our early adopters both asked if PODS stood for ‘Platform on Demand Service,’ and we decided that yes, yes it did!

Available now at http://www.PODS-hosting.com, “POD” comes from the fact that each website plus its elements such as a database, mail server, apache webserver, IP number and such, is hosted in a private and secure environment, using cloud technology. This private space is the pod, which is derived from ‘peas in a pod’ or a capsule.
The capsule concept means each client’s virtual server is not sharing resources with other websites, nor can it suffer corruption or interference from them.
PODS Hosting is deliberately and aggressively priced to compete on cost with cheap shared hosting, and even provides the simplicity of a shared hosting account’s easy self-service control panel. However it comes with the power and versatility of a Virtual Private Server (VPS) using “cloud” technology.
Aimed directly at people running an online store or similar business that demands high powered hosting, the user’s account can be easily upgraded in the future by purchasing more “PODS” as needed.
CEO Wam van Strij de Regt explains that PODS wasn’t originally intended as an abbreviation like ‘Payment On Delivery’. “Two of our early adopters both asked if PODS stood for ‘Platform on Demand Service’, and we decided that yes, yes it did!”
Those early adopter enthusiasts were clients already familiar with the PLANT Hosting company, which has been supplying hosting services since 1995.
So why a new division or company? Why not just add to the product list of PLANT?
Van Strij de Regt’s answer: “Because for the first time ever, we can offer all the advantages of the various hosting types, in a single package. This would have been impossible just 2 years ago because VM’s (Virtual Machines) took too many resources from the hardware to make them small enough to host just one site. You could not sell them for around $10 and manage them too! The technology for VM’s however became lighter and lighter and at some point there was one version that became so light that officially it wasn’t even a VPS anymore because it didn’t have a virtual network card and was missing other specs from it. Then I decided let’s create a platform around this technology and take the user experience and ease of use that people have grown accustomed to from shared hosting and mix it up. We succeeded even better than we expected and the result is PODS hosting.”
The new PODS system is now available to the public with its own website, including a New Year offer of the first month for free and special help for those using the Wordpress or Magento platforms.
