Meon, a leading manufacturer and supplier of surfacing material, equipment, products and machinery has just launched Eco-Thaw, a new biodegradable liquid alternative to rock salt – not a moment too soon judging by recent weather conditions!

With most of the UK experiencing icy cold weather and snow, Eco-Thaw provides an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional salting and gritting products.

“Our product is vital for winter road safety and has been tested to work in temperatures as low as -32°C. For rock salt to match the efficiency of Eco-Thaw, it would take 8 passes with a gritting lorry,” said Meon’s Bert Spencer.

“Eco-Thaw is safe to handle, non-corrosive, biodegradable, and safe for vegetation and animals, unlike rock salt. We’ve already been really busy stocking up for our customers who are getting ready for more icy weather,” he added.

Typically applied with a sprayer (also supplied by Meon), Eco-Thaw can be directed to where it is needed rather than scattering over passing cars and vegetation. This is especially good news for motorists as rock salt causes salt metal corrosion.

Another benefit of Eco-Thaw is that it starts working immediately and, by not being dependent upon moisture to bring it into a solution, requires far less frequent applications.

Bert concluded “Traditional rock salt can take all day to be an effective ice and snow solution. Eco-Thaw takes just 30 minutes, and will even de-bond compacted ice in a single application - great for slippery steps, windscreens and walkways.”
