'PIECES OF EASTER' Movie: "Why Not?", Says Kelly's Filmworks about Breaking Some Norms (and Some Eggs)

Kelly's FIlmworks, known for such inspiration films as 'Clancy' and 'The Perfect Gift' seeks to 'take a leap' on several new fronts - producing an independent comedy film, geared towards the Easter holiday, and starring a dynamic, but unknown, African American actress. The romantic comedy, entitled "Pieces of Easter", is loosely based on the Biblical story of the Prodigal Son.

We see Christina Karis as a candidate to be the next Kerry Washington.

Kelly's Filmworks Ltd, producers of such thought-provoking inspirational films as "Clancy", and "The Perfect Gift", is about to embark on a new movie venture, entering the historically 'forbidden' romantic comedy genre, with its newest offering, 'PIECES OF EASTER'. The movie, based on an original screenplay by actor/director Jefferson Moore, is trying to break some traditional show biz norms, relying on an under-served holiday occasion, diverse casting, and a commanding performance from a starlet who lacks (for the time being) a household name.

"The conventional thinking is that independent comedies (with no names) don't sell," says Kelly's Filmworks owner/producer Kelly Worthington. "When someone enjoys a romantic comedy, they usually want to do it with Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt."

However, Worthington, along with husband/co-producer Moore, hopes that the added dimension of 'Pieces' being a holiday film in a relatively un-crowded category (Easter) will help tip the scales in their favor. According to Worthington, "Christmas is pretty saturated with movies for audiences to enjoy during the yuletide holiday window, but there have been very few offerings for the Easter-time moviegoers (outside of 2011's "Hop"); even kid-oriented features like "Peter Cottontail" and "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" are a few decades old by now."

"Since we started this studio (in 2004), we have always tried to 'fill a void' and produce unique films that didn't currently exist," adds Moore, "so we're continuing that tradition with a new Easter movie that gets its message across as a romantic comedy."

Adding to the film's upside is the casting of Atlanta-based actress Christina Karis in the lead role of Alza, an arrogant young executive traveling cross-country for her family's Easter gathering. Though a relative unknown, Karis' pedigree comes by way of Virginia's Regent University and a successful Los Angeles stage and commercial career. "She's the most beautifully-gifted comedic actress you never heard of," says Worthington.

An April 2012 article in The Grio dealt with the recent emergence of stars like Kerry Washington and Gabrielle Union in lead roles, signifying a shift in trends with African American women beginning to take the reins in big and small screen venues. The Kelly's Filmworks producers see the casting of Karis as a positive in keeping with those trends and, "hopefully", says Worthington, "expanding our core audience at the same time."

"We see Christina Karis as a candidate to be the next Kerry Washington," adds Moore.

'PIECES OF EASTER' is slated for a contemporary 'multi-platform' release in March 2013.

Kelly's Filmworks is a self-proclaimed 'mom and pop studio' that exists to entertain and enlighten through cinematic storytelling.
