In August 2008, two vehicles and four people shipped themselves from Sydney, Australia, to the far east of Russia, Vladivostok, and then drove to London. Jan Hanley’s Today We Bought A Cow is an upbeat narrative of their extreme driving adventures and other stories from their amazing journey.

This book follows Viv, Jan, Evan and Christine’s extraordinary adventures: hilarious, dramatic, disastrous, dangerous and miraculous. This includes visa disasters, police run-ins, getting lost, running out of diesel, camping, managing disastrous break downs, meeting the locals, and buying a cow – thus the title.

When Didi Kalika, founder of the Lotus Children’s Home in Ulan Bataar, Mongolia, was asked what she needed immediately, she mentioned that she needed a cow so she could adopt one of her charges into a family. The group immediately responded, “we’ll buy you the cow.” “In a journey full of strange and wonderful experiences, buying a cow seemed almost natural,” the author shares.

The group also met the fabled takhi, barely escaped imprisonment, nearly asphyxiated themselves in a ger, endured nightly visitations of curious locals, bought black market diesel, drove through deep mud, deep sand, over frozen rivers, through sand storms, endured unspeakable latrines and bought a Bankhar puppy.

At the end of their trek they’d covered 40,000 kilometres, used 4,500 litres of diesel, and camped out in Russia, the Ukraine and Mongolia for a total of 36 nights, over a combined period of four months.

A keen traveller and explorer, she likes nothing better than to disappear with Viv into the great wilderness places in the world. She has three adult children who are long suffering and forgiving of her constant requirements for them to read and comment on what she writes, and Tammy, a beloved maltese dacshund cross dog, who is just long suffering.
