Bear Hugs and Butterfly Kisses is a family owned, “mom inspired” company dedicated to helping parents and caregivers understand their child’s developing mind and body. On the site, Nettunio shares her passion and knowledge of child development in her articles; developmental milestones, baby stimulation, brain development, physical development, language development, preparing for kindergarten and childhood learning disabilities.
The new site is dedicated to exploring childhood development and learning. Nettuno states, “At Bear Hugs and Butterfly Kisses we love babies and children and are fascinated with their growing minds! We believe that when instruction and products are developmentally appropriate, learning is fun!”
The site covers Developmentally Appropriate Instruction, they simply mean that toys, educational products, and instruction are designed to directly correlate with the child's current physical, social, and cognitive developmental abilities.
Below are a few examples of what is discussed on the site.
1. A newborn’s vision is immature. Young infants see patterns and contrasting colors best (especially black, white, and red); therefore, early baby stimulation, is very important. In addition, babies are naturally social creatures and are particularly fascinated with the human face, especially the part between the nose and forehead.
---As a result, toys with contrasting patterns, especially black, white, and red, and toys with bold eyes will completely captivate a young infant!
2. Babies and toddlers learn about their world primarily through their sensory perceptions (vision, hearing, touch (tactile).
3. Babies in their second year are becoming more and more mobile and more and more curious every day! They learn about their world by exploring and manipulating any and all objects they can get their little hands on!
The site also discusses additional childhood developmental stages as briefly summed up in the following:
After age 2 magical thought processes emerge and children begin to think symbolically, representing their world through language, drawings, and images. Preschoolers should be reading, writing/drawing, socializing, imagining and creating!
Preparing for kindergarten is tough work. If children are encouraged to explore, manipulate, imagine, create, role play and communicate, language, social and brain development will happen simultaneously! These activities help children develop the academic skills needed for Reading and Math! So let those children play, play, play and explore their world in every way!
Finally, in addition to including information about child development, developmentally appropriate instruction, and preparing for kindergarten, Nettuno includes important information about Childhood Learning Disabilities. In her article she discusses possible “red flags” as well as the process for diagnosis in the public schools. Nettuno hopes this article will serve as a valuable resource for both parents and teachers!
