We strive to offer the most advanced technology for laser eye care, refractive cataract and retina solutions under one roof to provide vision for livingTM. With the expansion, we can take the next step towards offering a complete solution centre.
Toronto, ON (PRWEB) December 12, 2012
With over fifteen years of commitment to improving the quality of life through vision correction, industry leader the Herzig Eye Institute has recently expanded their LASIK, Refractive Surgery, Refractive Cataract Surgery and Retina facility. With this expansion, the Herzig Eye Institute brand now reaches beyond a traditional Ophthalmology clinic to create a full solution centre that offers custom vision correction with advanced smart vision solutions to best meet the unique needs of each patient.
“We strive to offer the most advanced technology for laser eye care, refractive cataract and retina solutions under one roof to provide vision for livingTM,” states Dr. Sheldon Herzig, the Herzig Eye Institute. “With the expansion, we can take the next step towards offering a complete and thorough solution centre and provide consultations and services in house instead of having to refer patients to other specialized facilities.”
With a world renowned surgical team, top of the line diagnostics and life changing technologies, the Herzig Eye Institute is dedicated to providing the best sight saving and sight enhancing options specific to each individual patient depending on their individual needs for custom vision correction or solutions for refractive cataracts, retina conditions, presbyopia or dry eyes.
Laser Vision Correction
The Herzig Eye Institute offers two types of custom laser vision correction treatments: LASIK or PRK, both of which provide excellent results for correcting vision and eliminating the need for glasses. The thickness of the cornea and the surgeon’s interpretation of corneal topography and other measurements determine whether LASIK or PRK are more appropriate.
Other Vision Correction Options
A small number of people have refractive errors that are too large or eye conditions that are not appropriate for laser vision correction. In these situations, there are other treatments that are available at the Herzig Eye Institute.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
The RLE is used for patients with very high levels of nearsightedness or farsightedness, and for people who have early lens opacities. In addition, people in their middle years may appreciate the dual advantage of a refractive lens exchange: not only will it correct nearsightedness or farsightedness, but it also provides a better quality lens to replace the aging human lens.
The Intraocular Collamer Lens (ICL)
The ICL is used for patients who are at least 18 years of age, with high levels of myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism that are too extreme for laser vision correction, and for whom laser vision correction on the cornea is not safe.
Treatment of Presbyopia
A natural part of aging, people over the age of 40 begin to develop presbyopia and they start to have difficulty reading a menu, newspaper, computer, and other close-up objects. Until recently reading glasses and bifocal and multifocal lenses were the only solutions. On the cutting edge of technology, the Herzig Eye Institute offers baby boomers a number of effective alternatives and more permanent options for the treatment of presbyopia,
KAMRA Vision is a breakthrough solution for reversing the effects of presbyopia and consists of inserting the KAMRA™ inlay into the cornea. The inlay provides an improved range of focus for both near and intermediate vision without affecting distance vision significantly. The inlay is placed in the cornea of the non-dominant eye after making a flap or small opening in the cornea with a laser to provide a permanent solution for the loss of reading vision.
Monovision means that one eye, usually the dominant eye, is corrected for distance vision and the non-dominant eye is corrected for reading. This was originally achieved with a monocle and more recently with a monovision contact lens. Surgically, monovision can be achieved with LASIK, PRK, inserting a lens into the eye without removing a person’s natural lens (ICL), or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), exchanging the natural lens for an intraocular lens (IOL). With any of these surgical procedures one eye can be made to see clearly in the distance while the other eye is able to read. In almost all patients there is no awareness that the eyes are different making this a very successful approach.
Multifocal Intraocular Lenses:
Available for over 20 years, the quality of multifocal intraocular lenses has improved greatly since the late 1980’s providing excellent distance and reading vision in both eyes. Implanting a multifocal intraocular lens requires removing a person’s natural lens either because it has become cloudy (cataract), or simply to eliminate glasses while the natural lens is still clear. This is known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE). Quite often RLE is a safer and more precise procedure than laser vision correction with either LASIK or PRK. The lens that is used to replace the natural lens can either provide monovision, or if the lens is multifocal, distance and reading vision in both eyes. Another type of lens to restore reading is the accommodative lens.
Refractive Cataract Surgery
The Herzig Eye Institute is dedicated to providing the most recent technological advancements for Advanced Refractive Cataract Surgery to increase a patient’s potential of regaining their full range of vision, including reading vision, by utilizing presbyopic and multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) that simulate the youthful, natural lens. 85-90% of patients are completely glasses free following Advanced Refractive Cataract Surgery.
LipiFlow® for the treatment of Dry Eyes
The Herzig Eye Institute was the first centre in North America to introduce LipiFlow, a new advanced treatment system for patients who suffer from Evaporative Dry Eye disease. LipiFlow has received a medical device license from Health Canada and is FDA approved.
