Thomas Anapol, shareholder of the Anapol Schwartz law firm, was appointed as Plaintiff’s Coordinating Co-lead Counsel in the Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation (MDL 2391) on December 5. The proceeding to be held in the United States District Court Northern Division of Indiana will be presided over by Chief Judge Robert L. Miller.

Co-lead Counsel’s leadership responsibilities include representing all plaintiffs from around the country in hearings and conferences before the Court, coordinating and chairing Plaintiff’s Steering Committee and Executive Committee, and enforcing the orders of Judge Miller.*

Anapol and fellow Co-lead Counsel W. Mark Lanier will also work with members of the Executive Committee to conduct all pretrial discovery on behalf of the plaintiffs. Anapol will examine important witnesses and introduce evidence at hearings. He will also consult with experts and regularly inform the plaintiffs’ counsel across the country about the progress of the litigation.

“It is an honor to have been selected by Judge Miller to fulfill such an important job,” Anapol said. “But the case itself is an even bigger responsibility, because we are the voice for hundreds upon hundreds of people, many of whom have been seriously injured by these metal-on-metal hip implants sold by Biomet.”

In addition to his Co-lead Counsel position in the Biomet litigation, Anapol serves in a variety of other leadership capacities in other metal-on-metal hip litigations and in other medical device litigations across the country.

Many metal-on-metal hip replacement patients who have the Biomet M2a Magnum device are experiencing severe complications when the cobalt-chromium components grind together and shed debris into patients’ bodies. The implants can also loosen, or they can corrode and cause metal poisoning, tissue death, bone loss, tumor-like growths and other serious and potentially permanent problems.**

Symptoms of hip replacement failure include pain and swelling, fatigue, walking and flexibility difficulties, and squeaking or popping of the implant. These hip replacement complications can be warning signs of serious health problems caused by a metal-on-metal hip implant.**
