AMC Tampa Executive Careers Firm Reports on Credit Checks for Jobs

AMC Tampa executive career firm looks at the practice of pre-employment credit checks. A screening process that has become controversial in today's job market.

Having a low credit score or a bad credit report does not necessarily reflect on an employee’s ability to perform. Past performance determines what a candidate has to offer.

The Tampa based executive search experts at AMC feel that there are increasing concerns over credit checks as a part of pre-employment screening. “It used to be something that was only done where money, high security or valuables were involved” said a spokesperson for AMC Tampa Executive Search. “Now it’s more common place.”

According to the Society for Human Resource Management’s website, a 2004 to 2010 comparison of employers shows an increase in the number of employers who perform pre-employment credit checks, with as many as nearly sixty percent of employers reportedly running credit checks as a part of their pre-employment screening process. More people are juggling payments to make ends meet. AMC feels that the employment based credit check concerns are valid.

According to Tampa’s AMC executive search experts it’s more than that. A spokesperson for AMC sites Credit.Com’s ‘Credit Report and Score’ statistics which states that 25% of credit reports surveyed by the US PIRG contained serious errors, and that 79% of credit reports surveyed contained an error or mistake of some kind. “These types of errors can unfairly put a job seeker at a disadvantage,” says AMC.

With nineteen states already banning the use of credit checks as a part of pre-employment screening, others are looking at banning the practice as well. The state of Florida allows employment based credit checks. AMC says that just three years ago only sixteen states banned the practice, saying, “Only three more states in three years is just not enough progress. Having a low credit score or a bad credit report does not necessarily reflect on an employee’s ability to perform. Past performance determines what a candidate has to offer.”
