In Libby O’Neill’s The Jasper Plate, readers slip into a real world set in the quiet, suburban streets of Stockton, Newcastle. Behind closed doors, life hangs in a delicate balance between dire circumstances, crime, romance and broken trust. A myriad of different lives are revealed, living in a welter of personal motives.
Enter Adele, lately a spry widow who’s had a bad fall and is now living in a nursing home. Recently, Merle has been Adele’s housekeeper, nominally a trusted friend and confidant. When objects within Adele’s home disappear without adequate explanation, Merle suspects Adele’s son, Tobias, of filching from his mother. Tobias, by a quirk of circumstance, turns suspicion towards Merle and within the small community the finger of blame is pointed at Merle.
Merle’s nephew, Vince, lives in Sydney. This city-slicker has unfortunately had a shady past, but he’s now matured and seen the error of his youthful ways. Or has he? Despite his avowed change, Vince and his accomplice break into Adele’s home to retrieve something that Vince vehemently believes was promised to his aunt. In the process they discover a secret about Adele’s son. A moral drama unfolds.
Amid this unfolding drama, Adele’s sense of serenity and security in her old age is shaken, love blooms for a young couple and a Jasper plate will become the key to resolving a confusing puzzle - but not before people are misjudged or hurt unfairly. This is a book to satisfy readers’ desire to see beyond the staid curtains and see ordinary people play out a compelling drama on the stage of blind luck and fickle fate.
