Hostess financial struggles puts Twinkies back in the spotlight... and its unappetizing ingredients.

Twinkies Infographic

Much has been made about the financial struggles experienced by Hostess, but one of the more peculiar reactions from the talking heads on local and cable news and people interviewed on the streets is the sense of sorrow, as if the country is losing a bit of Americana if there are no more Twinkies on store shelves.

If anything good can come out of Twinkies stepping into the spotlight, it’s the opportunity to shine that spotlight on the ingredients themselves, some of which are used in decidedly unappetizing scenarios. One of the more effective ways to take on such a frightening and disturbing subject matter is to do so through light-hearted entertaining means, such as an infographic.

The Twinkie Infographic, put out by the WeightWise Bariatric Program in Edmond, OK, illustrates the natural and very unnatural ingredients in the famous yellow snack cake. While many of them are common and even relatively harmless, others are dietary nightmares, in part because they have no nutritional value whatsoever. Examples used in the infographic (illustrated with their other uses) include monocalcium phosphate (used in fertilizers), sodium acid pyrophosphate (leather treatment), and polysorbate 60 (skin care products).

With obesity at epidemic levels, the health care professionals at WeightWise Bariatric Program feel the current publicity of Hostess dessert cakes provides an opportunity to put the ingredients under a microscope for all to see. It’s important to examine what is in the foods Americans eat, which should give most people pause when they are next tempted by one those heavily preserved and processed foods.
