Quarterback Matt McGloin Leads Teammates In Helping Child Abuse Crisis Intervention Center

West Scranton native Matt McGloin has faced down adversity to create an impressive and amazing football career. A leader on the West Scranton High School team, a walk-on Nittany Lion who earned a spot as starting quarterback for the Penn State team, recently-named winner of the prestigious Burlsworth Trophy, to currently being recruited by the NFL, his career is definitely one to make any parent proud.

However, one of the efforts of which he and his family are most proud is his volunteer work and involvement in the fight against child abuse. He brings that compassion to his home town this month as he, and some of his teammates and coaches, host a special all-day event to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center of Northeastern Pennsylvania, a child abuse crisis intervention center.

McGloin, joined by eight other PSU players, Hall of Famer Jack Hamm and PSU Athletic Director Dave Joyner, will be the stars at a “Tailgate for Kids” party on December 15th at St. Mary’s Center in Scranton. Held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., this family-flavored afternoon includes a meet and greet with McGloin, members of the Penn State football and coaching teams, autographs, football tosses, tailgate food, live entertainment, games and raffles. Tickets are $10 per person.
Part two of the benefit event is “An Evening with Matt McGloin and Friends” scheduled from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Center. This adults-only event includes a meet and greet with McGloin, PSU football players and coaches, open bar, hot hors d’oeuvres, carving stations, music, live entertainment and raffles. Tickets are $50 per person.

“I am honored to be able to work with the Children’s Advocacy Center, an organization right here in my hometown that does so much to serve children who have suffered physical or sexual abuse and help them heal. I and my family fully support their mission,” said McGloin.

In 2011, CAC/NEPA provided services to 843 children, of which 85% were sexual abuse cases. This year, to date, more than 1,000 children have been referred to the center. CAC/NEPA’s medical and social services professionals provide abused children and their families the specialized care they need to repair their broken childhoods. A private, nonprofit charitable organization, the Children’s Advocacy Center is accessible to whoever needs help 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the time and support given the Children’s Advocacy Center by the McGloin family, especially Matt,” said CAC/NEPA Executive Director Mary Ann LaPorta. “Matt’s determination and willingness to give back to his community, especially in light of what the Penn State team has been through in the shadow of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, makes him an excellent role model, and we need more role models for our children! Matt is our homegrown hero, whose perseverance, work ethic and courage serve to inspire and strengthen the children of our communities. We are honored that Matt, his family, the Penn State family, and our sponsors…embrace the mission and message of the Children’s Advocacy Center/NEPA.”

Presenting sponsor for the event is Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank, headquartered in Dunmore with 11 branches throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania. Fidelity President Dan Santaniello said, “Fidelity Bank is proud to be able to support a community organization as worthy as The Children’s Advocacy Center. As a part of Northeastern Pennsylvania for over 109 years, we understand the importance of investing in the future, and there is no better way to do that than by supporting our children.”
