Being mercury-safe is part of our holistic dentistry philosophy which is intended to keep our patients and their families as safe as they can be.

Studio Z Dental, a family general dental practice led by Dr. Tom Zyvoloski in Louisville, CO, has released a YouTube video about mercury-safe dentistry and the dangers of mercury in silver amalgam fillings.

“People are always asking us about the mercury dangers pertaining to silver amalgam filling removals, so we produced this video to help educate the public about the safety precautions we take with each procedure,” Studio Z Dental’s principal dentist, Dr. Tom Zyvoloski said.

While many dentists are technically “mercury-free dentists”, Studio Z Dental is one of few dental offices in the Denver area that is “mercury-safe”. Many dentists in the United States have discontinued placing new silver amalgam fillings, which would qualify these dentists to be considered “mercury-free”, but a “mercury-safe” dentist takes the health of the patient several steps further.

By being “mercury-safe”, Studio Z Dental follows the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology’s (IAOMT) protocols to keep patients from being exposed to high levels of mercury that are released when a patient needs to have an old silver amalgam filling drilled out and removed.

“Being mercury-safe is part of our holistic dentistry philosophy which is intended to keep our patients and their families as safe as they can be,” Zyvoloski said.

To offer the safest procedure for silver amalgam filling removal, Studio Z Dental uses a high tech Swiss purification system (IQ Air) specially designed to sit close to the mouth area and suck out mercury vapor so patients don’t inhale it during the procedure. They also place patients on pure oxygen to ensure they are getting fresh, clean air throughout the process. In addition, they have a special system of air ionizers throughout the office call “Air Defense” that further purifies the air in the entire office.

According to the IAOMT, having a silver amalgam filling removed without taking “Mercury-Safe” precautions actually exposes patients to mercury levels at least 1,000 times the World Health Organization’s safe level of exposure. When this procedure is performed in a mercury-safe environment like Studio Z Dental’s office in Louisville, however, exposure to mercury is drastically reduced.

Mercury in amalgam fillings can be linked to a variety of health complications including dysfunction in the immune system, multiple sclerosis, kidney ailments, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, reproductive issues, cardiovascular problems, absorption of heavy metals in the brain, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, antibiotic resistance, hearing loss, and a myriad of other health problems, according to a “The Toxic Effects of The Mercury in Dental Amalgam Fillings on The Environment and Human Health”, a fact sheet prepared by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).

“Mercury is one of the most poisonous naturally-occurring substances on the planet, and what a lot of people don’t know is that they have it in their mouths,” Dr. Zyvoloski said. “Silver amalgam fillings are the greatest source of mercury exposure for those who have them.”

Mercury’s dangerous effects on women and children have been well documented, and the governments of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark have already banned the use of mercury fillings in Dentistry, the IAOMT report said.

“Scientific studies proving the devastating impact of mercury on pregnant woman and children are abundant, which is why pregnant women and children are advised not to eat certain types of seafood that might contain methylmercury,” the IAOMT report said. “Mercury has been found to be a factor in autism, and as such dental amalgam fillings (maternal) have been directly linked to autism as well.”
