2012 emitted a few signals that suggest that 2013 could be a fantastic year for ice cream manufacturers.

2012 was indeed a turbulent year for the ice cream industry but, it did show many positives that suggest that 2013 could be a record year. First and foremost was the increased volume of ice cream parlours being opened all around the UK. Ice cream parlours are hugely successful in the USA and many other European countries and their rise to popularity is almost reminiscent of the coffee shop revolution of the late 90’s. If the market parallels and makes eating ice cream a more social, enjoyable occasion, not just something to have after a meal, at home or while out visiting tourist destinations, then the market pick-up could be astonishing.

As well as being more ‘social’ and ‘enjoyable’, increased media recognition throughout the year, and the subsequent brand association that goes with it, also made the occasion ‘cooler’. Probably most predominantly, the Iceceamists of Covent Garden launched its company with an ‘anarchy’ style marketing campaign, based in part on the album artwork of the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The B******s. The resulting media coverage captured the hearts and minds of many an individual which, could easily manifest into increased ice cream sales across the board, not just in parlours.
