The tracking system is now being considered by various sites within our global organisation to assist with our production flow and streamlining throughout the business

Boston Networks has designed and deployed a Real-Time Location System (RTLS) and Asset Tracking and Management solution for FMC Technologies, to quickly and accurately locate high value equipment within its manufacturing facility. The system leverages FMC’s existing Boston Network Wireless LAN infrastructure to help improve operational efficiency and business processes by eliminating the need to manually search for items.
FMC Technologies is a leading global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry, with offices worldwide. The Boston Networks solution is now fully operational within FMC Technologies Dunfermline Subsea Facility, a 213,000 square-foot plant responsible for the design and manufacturing of subsea trees, wellhead systems and associated equipment for the oil and gas industry.
The FMC Technologies production and testing environment is highly volatile and assets are regularly on the move. Real-time visibility of these assets throughout the manufacturing process is crucial for:
- Improving and optimising operations
- Increasing production throughput
- Improving plant health and safety
The Boston Networks deployment encompasses a bespoke Wireless LAN, AeroScout Wi-Fi RFID Tags, which attach to the assets being tracked, and AeroScout MobileView software, which allows staff to quickly locate needed items anywhere in the facility with an intuitive graphical user interface. The system is now used to track components used in the manufacturing process of petrochemical wellhead devices, which are commonly used to cap oil pipes on the seabed.
Due to the environment in which the devices are used and rigorously tested, the asset tracking tags needed to be waterproof and ATEX certified. FMC Technologies is also using the Boston Networks system to track assets for which it is required to hold a license: the solution helps ensure that FMC Technologies doesn’t breach its licenses and automates reporting for audits.
Boston Networks selected the AeroScout solution for FMC Technologies because it works with the existing infrastructure, making deployment quicker and easier.
“FMC Technologies has a complex production environment with special requirements, making it even more important to have the real-time visibility into its processes that AeroScout enables,” said Janet Chaffin, President at AeroScout Industrial. “We’re proud of our work with Boston Networks to help FMC Technologies gain the visibility it needs to remove inefficiencies, streamline business processes and improve reporting. We look forward to working with Boston Networks to further extend the benefits of the FMC Technologies solution.”
John Johnston, Health, Safety and Radiation Advisor, FMC Technologies adds, “The original concept of tracking our assets was a first for FMC Technologies and it was challenging to find a suitable provider to partner with for maximum results. Boston Networks were finally selected from three organisations with the selection based on the provider understanding our specific requirements, quality of product and attention to detail we required from the outset.
The project from design to installation was faced with many unforeseen challenges; however, Boston Networks worked tirelessly with our project team until full commissioning of the new system.
The tracking system we now have within the facility allows us to track high value assets in real time and helps us comply with our specialist statutory licenses. We are now entering Phase 2 to extend the tracking system to other assets and production items within the facility.
The tracking system is now being considered by various sites within our global organisation to assist with our production flow and streamlining throughout the business.' ends.
