Onesource Professional Search, LLC, is known mainly for placing direct hire engineers and other professionals in the oil and gas, chemical, marine, and civil infrastructure industries. The firm’s goal for 2013 is to also become known as the go-to firm for contract placements.
In May, the firm added Technical Recruiter Ryan Bailey to help grow the contract staffing side of the business. Bailey’s background is in contract staffing, having served as an account manager for two international staffing firms before joining Onesource Professional.
With Bailey on board, Onesource Professional has developed a plan for increasing the firm’s contract placements in 2013. The first step of that plan is to simply educate their existing clients on the advantages of contract staffing, which Bailey says is underutilized in their niche.
“Typically it’s in a contract-to-hire scenario. Usually it’s when someone is relocating and they want to make sure it’s the right fit for them as well as the client before making a more permanent commitment,” Bailey said.
Bailey intends to have discussions with clients about leveraging contractors on a wider scale. One issue is that employers often assume contract staffing is more expensive than direct hire placements because the bill rate (the amount that is charged to the client) is higher than the typical pay rate for an employee. But Bailey believes that once they consider the hidden costs associated with direct hiring, they will find that contract staffing can potentially be more cost effective.
Some of those “hidden costs” include employer share of the taxes, along with unemployment, workers compensation, and employee benefits, said Debbie Fledderjohann, President of Top Echelon Contracting (TEC). Onesource Professional utilizes TEC’s back-office services through which TEC becomes the Employer of Record for the firm’s contractors and handles all of those financial responsibilities, including offering contractors health insurance through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
“Once clients realize that they are not responsible for these expenses when they utilize contractors through Onesource Professional, they have an added incentive to do contract staffing,” Fledderjohann said.
In addition to educating current clients, Onesource Professional will be reaching out to new clients and plans to eventually hire additional account managers to help facilitate the contract staffing growth. They are also going to expand into the IT portion of the oil and gas industry, an area which Bailey feels is more open to contract staffing.
