Connecticut insurance agency, Paradiso Insurance, reminds CT businesses and residents to be extra careful when serving alcohol at parties this holiday season. While it may seem like fun and games at the time, drinking too much can put quite a damper on holiday cheer, especially if a business or homeowner is deemed liable for an accident or injury.

Many businesses and homeowners do not realize that they can be found legally liable if an intoxicated guest causes a car crash. While the intoxicated driver cannot sue the party host, the third party involved in the accident may. This is common, especially if the drunk driver has little or no insurance at all.

“In 2010, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes , meaning one every 51 minutes,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). What’s worse is the fact that most of these accidents happen around this time of year. To ensure a safe and fun holiday party, minus any alcohol liability issues, it is critical to do the following:

  •     Limit the consumption of alcohol by providing each guest with 2-3 tickets.
  •     Close the bar at least an hour or two before the party ends.
  •     Provide enough food to keep a good balance between food and drink.
  •     Have a cab number handy to offer alternative transportation to those who are too drunk to drive.
  •     Prepare a room or place for guests to stay, just in case.
  •     Monitor guests and keep tabs on those who may have had too much to drink.
  •     Never be afraid to take the keys of someone who is too drunk to drive.

To avoid a liability claim all together, businesses and homeowners can always consider passing on the serving of alcoholic beverages at holiday parties. It’s also important for locals to check their Connecticut homeowners insurance or business insurance policy. Hosts must make sure that there is no policy exclusions related to alcohol-related incidents. For more information, contact Paradiso Insurance, today!
