In his new suspense novelAssumption City” (published by iUniverse), author Terrence Murphy tells the story of a teenager’s suicide. The reasons the boy takes his life remain a mystery until years later, when the sudden appearance of a strangely-lighted window on the campus of a Boston hospital sets off a tumultuous cascade of events. Some see an image of the Virgin Mary in the window, and it quickly becomes a magnet for the devout, the curious, those hoping to profit from it, and others seeking divine approval for their actions.

Revelations, including blackmail and conspiracy, propel the story to a violent climax.

Set in a Boston neighborhood and the nearby North Shore in 2002, the action plays out just as the sexual abuse crisis in the Catholic Church starts spinning out of control.

Although “Assumption City” is entertaining and emotionally engaging, readers will quickly recognize the broader significance of the novel. Sexual abuse and teen suicide are hot topics, but the book’s universal themes – appearance and reality, good and evil, religious faith and skepticism – are as relevant today as anytime in the past.
