Community Development Corporation of Long Island Named One of First Designees to NeighborWorks America’s Comprehensive “Green” Program

New Program Recognizes Commitment to Sustainable Business Practices, Resulting in Savings and Better Environments for Thousands of Low- and Moderate-Income Families.

“NeighborWorks America is honored to recognize CDCLI as a leader in creating healthier and more sustainable homes and communities,” said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen Fitzgerald.

Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), a charter member of NeighborWorks America, has been named one of 16 organizations nationally to receive the NeighborWorks Green Organization designation for a comprehensive commitment to sustainable operations from NeighborWorks America, based on adherence to a set of green business practices across the organization’s operations and all of their program areas.

“NeighborWorks America is honored to recognize CDCLI as a leader in creating healthier and more sustainable homes and communities,” said NeighborWorks America CEO Eileen Fitzgerald, who presented CDCLI President and CEO Marianne Garvin with the award on December 11 in Washington, DC. This is the first time NeighborWorks has recognized organizations for their efforts to create healthier, energy efficient environments for homeowners, renters, community residents and employees.

Said Garvin, “We are honored to receive this award and designation. CDCLI employees are proud to help lead the way in sustainable practices. Our commitment to sustainability is as central to our mission as our commitment to providing Long Islanders with affordable housing and small business opportunities.”

CDCLI has been implementing green programs, such as its successful execution of the federal Weatherization program on behalf of New York State, for decades. Through the program, CDCLI has provided free energy efficiency improvements to over 17,500 very low income residents of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, making the homes of low-income homeowners and renters healthier and, almost as important, saving them money.

CDCLI has expanded its green programs to include a one-day energy efficiency course as part of the Home Maintenance Training Program, and as well as ensuring that all new CDCLI real estate projects meet green specifications, including a multi family development underway using Energy Star 3 standards. In the near future, CDCLI will be providing energy efficiency loans to small businesses in partnership with New York State.

Under Garvin’s leadership, the Long Island Green Homes Consortium was created to bring energy efficiency programs to those of all incomes. The efforts of the Consortium, a coalition of municipalities, utilities, contractors, and non-profit organizations, have resulted in over 1,850 home retrofits.

And, according to Garvin, as Long Island rebuilds from the effects from Superstorm Sandy, “CDCLI will play a leadership role in rebuilding our communities greener and more resilient to climate change.” For more information on CDCLI’s green efforts, visit

To become a NeighborWorks Green Organization, CDCLI has been able to green its internal operations through a corporate-wide culture shift and employee commitment. For example, a paper recycling program and electronics recycling program were adopted, the later which has resulted in trees being planted on CDCLI’s behalf. An eco-friendly travel policy was instituted, as was a green purchasing policy. Additionally, the organization provides incentives for commuting.

The NeighborWorks Green Organization designation is significant because it challenges organizations to be comprehensive in their green efforts. By embracing a sustainable business culture, they produce benefits to thousands of individuals through homeowner education, housing development activities, and community engagement programs. Collectively, these activities help reduce energy consumption and costs, create healthier living and working environments, and promote sustainable communities.

NeighborWorks America’s goal is for two-thirds of its member organizations to receive a green designation by 2016. As a result, more than 100,000 residents in NeighborWorks rental properties would have better information on managing healthy, energy-conscious homes; more than 25,000 low- and moderate-income families annually would possess the knowledge and skills to assess the homes they are buying for green, healthy features; and 6,000 owner-occupants each year would receive healthy, energy-efficiency home repairs.
