Erin Northcott has united with Elevate Films to complete “Be Brave” the film left behind by her brother, the late Canadian filmmaker Daniel Northcott (1980 – 2009).
On November 30th, 2012 a fundraising mission was put into motion to raise completion funds for “Be Brave”. In just 2 weeks they have raised over $38,000.00 and received an international outpouring of support on crowd-funding site Indiegogo (http://www.indiegogo.com/Be-Brave). This unique documentary film will be assembled from over 1,000 hours of footage, shot by Daniel from 2000 to 2009, in 42 countries.
Daniel Northcott is the son of acclaimed Canadian folk singer and recording artist Tom Northcott. Daniel left in his legal will the request that his sister Erin oversee the completion of his film. After a long search for the right film team, Erin has united with Elevate, an entertainment portfolio that challenges the international film community to create works of social and global importance. On December 1st, 2012, Together they unveiled a moving visual explanation of the film featuring Daniel’s footage, that invites the world to contribute and be a part of the completion of Daniel’s film Be Brave.
Dan Northcott spent 9 years exploring the world, capturing his adventures and his subsequent year long battle with leukemia, on-camera for his film project. Northcott’s mission to connect with humanity at large and capture extraordinary places reminds even the most skeptical that we live in an amazing world full of glory and mystery.
In April of 2007, Dan's quest led him into the jungles of the Yucatán Peninsula and deep into the bowels of a mysterious cave. His video camera was unflinching as he and a friend, guided by a local indigenous man, crawled through narrow spaces to finally arrive at an ancient Mayan burial site. Despite repeated warnings from their guide not to remove anything from the cave, Dan took a calcified bone with him when they departed – the remnant of a human sacrifice. A few months later, he was diagnosed with Leukemia, a bone marrow cancer and told that he only had a few months to live.
Amazingly, Dan continued to document every detail of the roller-coaster ride that ensued - from the doctor delivering the crushing news, to every aspect of the medical procedure –loosing his hair, intimate moments with friends and family— literally every twist and turn that led to his final day. He left the legacy of this one-of-a-kind footage to his sister Erin Northcott, with her promise to oversee the completion and release of his life’s work.
“The footage that Dan left to us is among the most remarkable I have seen in my lifetime, and we are deeply honored and humbled to bring this one-of-a-kind document of one courageous young man’s reckoning with his mortality to the screen,” said Director Mikki Willis, founder and CEO of Elevate Studios. “It would be a challenge to dream a story more perfect for this moment on planet Earth, as we stand together at the crossroads and contemplate our options: reunite with nature or be consumed by it.
"Be Brave is ultimately about leaping from the ordinary to the extraordinary.”
Using Real footage filmed by the late Daniel Northcott, Be Brave tells Dan’s unbelievable true-life story and trace his family’s journey to the jungles of Mexico to return the ancient artifact to its rightful place in the burial cave.
