Spectra QEST congratulates its largest US customer, Professional Service Industries, Inc. (PSI), for being awarded a Gold Medal in the 2013 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Texas Engineering Excellence Awards for its innovative use of software to minimise holdups on the US$1.02 billion DFW Connector project in Texas, USA.

The DFW Connector is the single largest highway transportation project in the United States funded under President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). It includes the reconstruction and expansion of two major highway interchanges along four highways, with a total of 5 bridges.

The Texas Department of Transport (TxDOT) imposed stringent requirements on its contractors, including a 24 hour test report turnaround time, and the requirement for test results and raw data to be entered into TxDOT’s I2MS system for statistical analysis. Additionally, PSI was required to upload all test reports to the document management system of the project contractor, Northgate Constructors.

PSI met these challenges by implementing a solution comprising three of Spectra QEST’s software products, QESTLab, QESTField, and Construction Hive. With this solution, PSI was able to not only comply with the short test report turnaround times and electronically upload all test data and reports to the third party systems, it also made significant savings in administration costs. PSI estimates that it reduced its administration labour costs by 70% in 2012, compared with what they would have spent without the system. In September 2012, their YTD spend was $92,000 compared with an estimated $285,000 without the system.

In addition to allowing PSI and Northgate Constructors to meet their contractual obligations, the system also provided a significant boost to Northgate Constructor’s ability to deliver the project successfully. Gordon Peterson, PE, Construction Quality Control Manager for Northgate Constructors said: “I would like to take a moment to express Northgate Constructors’ gratitude towards your company’s [PSI’s] initiative to utilize QESTField software solution as a daily course of business. Not only is the information easier to report and easier to publish, the information is available in near real time. Our Engineers are now able to assess that data and information, enabling problem solving and engineering judgements to be made when the decisions ought to be made – as the work is happening”.
