fishbat, Inc. COO Scott Darrohn comments in the latest ‘fishbat Splash’ video press release episode about Buzzfeed’s new Twitter project, @YourInAmerica, which pokes fun at ungrammatical tweets.

On December 15, 2012, online marketing company fishbat, Inc. launched a new video press release discussing the new Twitter account @YourInAmerica.

In the latest edition of fishbat Inc.’s video press release series ‘fishbat Splash’, host and fishbat COO Scott Darrohn spoke about the Twitter account @YourInAmerica, which edits and retweets grammatically incorrect tweets. Created by Buzzfeed, the account already has over 18,000 followers. This is especially impressive, Darrohn says, since the account has only been around since mid-November. The name @YourInAmerica pokes fun at the common confusion between possessive “you” and contracted “you are,” often considered a stereotypically American mistake. Every time a Twitter user tweets the phrase “your in America,” the bot corrects the tweet and spits it back out with a humorous jab like “bro, it’s ‘you’re’.” Darrohn points out that many consider “the public’s inability to differentiate [between the two forms] disturbing. However, I do have a feeling a lot of English teachers out there would appreciate this account.” The bot also serves as a humorous check on intolerance, since it targets users who angrily tweet that foreigners should “learn English,” but who make grammar mistakes themselves.

In the video, Darrohn describes how the meteoric rise in the account’s popularity came after one man in Georgia was shamed into correcting his ungrammatical tweet after it was lambasted by the @YourInAmerica account. “Too harsh? Maybe,” says Darrohn. “But sometimes, a little humor is needed to get the point across.” This kind of Twitter shaming is intended to be funny, but is it effective? Can humor be successful at countering true racism and hatred? Maybe not, but the irony of highlighting tweets containing mangled English by people who supposedly wanting to protect the language makes this bot appealing to many.
