While the sluggish economy inches forward, credit card companies continue to compete for business by offering high-value signup bonuses and cardholder perks. CardRatings.com reveals its Editor’s Choice Awards for the best credit cards in various categories, along with predictions for card issuer trends in 2013.

The credit card market has made a resurgence, and this year's picks are some of the best offers we've seen in years. Consumers should take a quick inventory of their current cards and see if they measure up.

CardRatings.com releases its 2012 Editor’s Choice Awards, highlighting editors’ picks for best credit cards across a number of categories. The research summarizes each winning card’s best features. Winners were chosen by CardRatings.com’s panel of editors and industry experts, including CardRatings.com founder Curtis Arnold.

"The credit card market has made a resurgence, and this year's picks are some of the best offers we've seen in years,” said Arnold. “Consumers should take a quick inventory of their current cards and see if they measure up. You’re not married to your card, and if you’re only getting 1 percent back in rewards, you are potentially leaving quite a bit of money on the table every year.”

Winners in part one of CardRatings.com’s 2012 Editor’s Choice Awards include:

Best Cash Back Credit Cards

  •     Fidelity Investment Rewards American Express
  •     Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

Best Airline/Travel Credit Cards

  •     Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card
  •     Capital One Venture Rewards

Best Low Interest Credit Cards

  •     Simmons First Visa Platinum
  •     Navy Federal Credit Union Visa Platinum

Best Low Introductory Rate Credit Cards

  •     PenFed Promise Visa
  •     Slate from Chase

Of the eight cards featured in part one of the Editor’s Choice Awards, five have been on the list in previous years, four in their same category.

“A few issuers have found a great combination of service, benefits and rewards that are impossible to ignore. As long as they continue to maintain a high standard, I’d expect to see them on the list again and again,” said Amber Stubbs, managing editor of CardRatings.com.

Part two of the 2012 Editor’s Choice Awards will be released January 2, 2013, announcing winners in additional categories, including credit cards for poor-credit borrowers and innovative programs from card issuers.
