SocialTransactions, a San Francisco-based tech startup, announced a new partnership with Water For People, a Denver-based nonprofit focused on improved water and sanitation in the developing world. In partnering with Water For People, SocialTransactions aims to further validate its “non-donation” fundraising technology, a tool that will be released widely in early 2013. Water For People supporters can download early by visiting a special SocialTransactions landing page.
“Water For People believes in the power of technology to increase efficiency and effectiveness,” said Eileen Lambert, Senior Interactive Media Manager at Water For People. “Partnering with SocialTransactions and being a part of this new technology furthers our work and will be a great asset to our fundraising efforts.”
The SocialTransactions’ web application, currently deployed as a “nearly invisible” browser add-on, automatically makes small donations to organizations like Water For People every time users make an online purchase. The donations result from commissions from merchants and unlike traditional donations or e-commerce checkout donations, the transaction doesn’t charge the user.
“We’ve been excited about alternative, non-donation funding sources for nonprofit causes for some time now,” said James Schaffer, CEO of SocialTransactions. “SocialTransactions makes this vision a reality, but also deepens the relationship between an organization like Water For People and its supporters or would-be supporters. It’s a new, no-cost way to do some good, and it’s driven by your everyday consumption behavior.” The company is the first to make the technology effective at most web stores, unobtrusive for users, and tailored to nonprofit fundraisers’ needs.
While Water For People and SocialTransactions are working together on short-term holiday promotional activities to drive new signups, they are also focused on the long-term opportunities. “Our goal is not to make Water For People a one-time return on its time investment,” added Schaffer. “We want to become a reliable and recurring income source.”
SocialTransactions was founded in 2012 by a group of veteran nonprofit fundraising professionals to develop innovative fundraising solutions for nonprofit organizations and simple, no-cost ways for individuals to support their favorite causes. The company uses browser technology to pay a fundraising organization a commission every time its supporters purchase online.
