Push to Walk, a non-profit specialized exercise gym that empowers people with spinal cord injuries, paralysis, and other neurological conditions to realize their individual potential, is recruiting a team to participate in the New Jersey Marathon, Half Marathon, or Relay. The team will include trainers, staff, family, friends, members of the community, and Push to Walk clients who will be using hand-cycles to participate.

The course endured a lot with Hurricane Sandy, but the race is on and we are prepared to create the most dedicated Team Push to Walk yet.

The Marathon will take place at Long Branch, NJ Sunday, May 5, 2013. Team Push to Walk is recruiting runners early to allow enough time for safe and successful training for the event. Those interested in joining can do so by emailing Stephanie at slajam (at) pushtowalknj (dot) org for the registration process. Participants must submit an application to Push to Walk by April 1 and commit to raising $500 in sponsorships. All money must be raised by April 25. Donations can be pledged to the overall cause or to an individual participant through the fundraising website. Volunteers are welcome to help at the event as well.

“The course endured a lot with Hurricane Sandy, but the race is on and we are prepared to create the most dedicated Team Push to Walk yet” said Karla Ruaya, Team Push to Walk coach and trainer. “Each year more clients have joined the team and hope to have ten clients on the team this year and are reaching out to different running clubs for recruitment opportunities.”

Push to Walk is able to cover about 65% of its operating costs through client fees, but relies on fundraising events to help make up the difference. “Our clients come to us because they see an improvement in their quality of life. We work hard to keep our fees affordable so cost doesn’t stand in the way of them achieving their goals. The money we raise goes to covering our operating costs, purchasing new equipment, and creating scholarship opportunities for clients in need,” explains Cynthia Templeton, President of Push to Walk.

Push to Walk uses exercise trainers certified in methods known to help people regain strength, function and independence and provide one-on-one workouts to their clients. The next closest facilities of this kind are located in Boston and North Carolina. “Crossing the finish line at the NJ Marathon was quite an emotional experience and I cannot say that it is one I would have ever had if Push to Walk did not present the opportunity to me”, said client Lois Hamilton.

Online registration and donation opportunities are available on the Push to Walk website: For more information, please contact Stephanie Lajam at (862) 200-5848 or slajam (at) pushtowalknj (dot) org.
