A dead carrier pigeon used in WWII was found in a fireplace with an encrypted message still attached to his leg. The pigeon was found by 74 year old David Martin from Blenchingly, Surrey, when he was renovating his chimney. The message had so far foiled the experts as they could not crack it. The code has been with GCHQ since November but no one has been also to decipher the information.

The story hit the headlines and Gord Young from Peterborough in Ontario Canada says he may hold the key. Mr Young said that a simple World War I code was used to detail German troop positions in Normandy. Using his great uncle's Royal Flying Corp (92 Spd-Canadian) aerial observers’ book he claims he can work out the note. According to the report, also believes it was a bird belonging to Sgt William Scott who was dropped in Normandy with pigeons to report on German positions. He is sure that the code is from WWI as Scott was trained by a WWI trainer and the spelling of Serjeant dates deep in British Military WWI history.

Private Investigator Leeds found this article particularly interesting as they offer spy equipment, gadgets and services that can be of great help during investigations and surveillance in the modern day. The use of animals especially dogs is also used in some surveillance services where agents pose as dog walkers. The carrier pigeon idea would have been a very modern and cutting edge experiment in its day.

A spokesperson from Private Investigator Leeds said:
