Evelyn Razilov explores the connections between colors, mood and imagination in her new illustrated children’s book, “The Beautiful Fish” (published by Trafford Publishing).
Under the deep blue sea, a beautiful fish lives among an array of aquatic wildlife including crabs, jellyfish, turtles and sea stars. The fish’s ability to change colors based on her mood makes her unique from all the other fishes in the sea. When she’s happy, she turns red; when she’s sad, she turns gray; when she’s playing with friends she becomes yellow, and when she’s being polite and easygoing, she becomes all the colors of the rainbow.
One day, the beautiful fish was swimming along, singing happily to herself when she met a crab. The crab said to her, “I used to live in the ocean, and in the deep ocean lives a fish that looks like you.” The fish responds that she’s the only fish out there who can change colors, and the crab swam away in silence, leaving the beautiful fish sad and gray.
The beautiful fish can’t stop thinking about what the crab said and is very curious to find out more about this fish from the depths of the ocean. She asks the crab for directions to the ocean, and he responds, “It’s a very long way, but if you really want something, it will come through,” adding that the fish should “Just believe.”
Well, the beautiful fish believed very much, and one day her wish came true. Young readers and listeners alike will delight in finding out what happens when a whale brings a special visitor to her all the way from the great big ocean beyond.
