Angie’s List is offering 1,000 Hurricane Sandy victims an unexpected gift this holiday season: a free, one-year membership to help them find good, local contractors as they begin to rebuild.

“These free memberships are part of our overall effort to help homeowners avoid the unscrupulous contractors who may be trying to take advantage of those affected by the storm,” said Angie’s List founder Angie Hicks. “We’re continuing to offer concierge help to our members who are having a tough time finding good help.”

To access a free membership, homeowners must call 1-877-648-2448 and specifically ask for one. These memberships are on a first call, first-served basis and will be limited to those in the New York Tri-State area. The memberships will enable homeowners to have full access to Angie’s List for a full year.

For additional storm-related help and information, Angie’s List is offering tips on how to hire, how to avoid scams and an easy-to-use tool to check the license statuses of various companies. http://www.angieslist.com/hurricane-sandy

After the storm, Angie’s List reached out to thousands of highly rated contractors along the East Coast checking to see if they were open for business, if they needed help reaching qualified crews and what Angie’s List could do to help them get to work. Angie’s List will use that information, along with its deep database of information, to advise homeowners who to hire and who to avoid.

“The companies that have earned high grades from our members are the companies you want working for you,” Hicks said. “They have a strong record of good service. They’re homeowners, too, and they’re eager to rebuild.”
