The Adventures of Smoky by Nicholas Nurston is a photo illustration book relating both the imaginary and actual adventures and observations of a sharp good-looking tom cat with a keen interest in food, a self-willed creature that chooses to live exclusively outdoors. It also partakes of a long held love of Richmal Crompton’s Just William humour.
This children’s story book will encourage a general awareness of both the natural and physical world by factual explanation of common-day experiences with an added emphasis on good road sense. It takes place in and around a growing sea-side village in the picturesque Vale of Glamorgan in South Wales. Smokey’s adventures are made relevant by references made to an old couple he has adopted. Herein is an interesting, catching interplay of attitude between friends engendered by a seemingly distant relationship. To quote from text, “Cat’s consciousness close-by humans, had been mistaken for timidity, something this Fine Furry Fanciful Feline, Categorically was not!”
Encompassing the traditional and the technological seamlessly, The Adventures of Smoky, though primarily written for children, will have all age groups inventing excuses to become involved in its bedtime reading sessions. A traditional adventure story, it sort of creeps up on readers with smooth introductions of technological, natural and biological facts. Add to this the fact that Smoky is a purveyor of innuendo and subtle wit, with a measure of cynicism, and sometimes pathos, Nicholas Nurston has written a winning tale for the young at heart.

About the Author
Nicholas Nurston was born in South Wales, into a working class environment in 1935. Just as today, the world was beset by political and financial difficulties. From a tender age, he developed a love for mechanical, electrical and electronics engineering, eventually qualifying as a professional in all three. His hobbies and sports interest are varied, from having raced sports cars in his fifties to a current interest in steam railways of the
prototype and model kind. Engineers invariably think in a logical manner. He has always held a great interest in the sciences and never stopped searching out the reasons for human existence.
