Getting a salary helps the students live on a budget, save, and become more realistic on how difficult is to earn your own money.

Telcom & Data, a Milwaukee-based telecommunications company, has partnered with Alexander Hamilton High School to provide internships to participants in the school’s co-op program. The goal of the program is to help students develop practical career skills. The company has hired two interns this semester, Lisbette Rivera and Jesus Cordova.

Cordova and Rivera are gaining valuable career skills by developing the company’s e-commerce websites. “This job has been a great experience for me so far. I have really improved my internet research and writing skills,” said Rivera. “It’s going to be nice to have a little extra money this Christmas. Most of my friends don’t have this kind of opportunity.”

The skill-set developed at Telcom & Data can qualify students for full-time careers or spur students to further develop their business savvy in college. Cordova said he wasn’t planning on studying business in college, but his experience at Telcom & Data has motivated him to consider a business career.

Rocio Santa leads the co-op program at Alexander Hamilton High School. She enjoys helping her students develop life skills not taught in a traditional curriculum. “Getting a salary helps the students live on a budget, save, and become more realistic on how difficult is to earn your own money,” she said. “The experience students gain in customer service and interacting with co-workers helps them to mature.”

Telcom & Data moved its headquarters to Milwaukee in 2010. The company was formally based in Chicago. Ricardo Trinidad, President of Telcom & Data, said, “We want to make a positive impact on the community in Milwaukee. I’m happy to partner with schools and provide career opportunities that will help young people grow.” This is the first year the company has participated in the program. Trinidad said he plans to work with Alexander Hamilton High School for many years to come.
