Connecticut insurance agency, Paradiso Insurance, reminds locals to insure their holiday gifts this year. While some holiday gifts may be inexpensive, others may not be as easy to replace, such as a new computer, diamond necklace, television, or even an antique set of silverware.

One year ago, the Commerce Department’s U.S. Census Bureau released retail sales data for December 2011. Their findings proved that retail sales increased 6.5% from December 2010. It is no secret that this number continues to increase. If Americans continue to purchase more products than the year before, it’s important to understand that coverage will be needed to cover the cost of replacing these items should they become stolen or damaged by a house fire or other covered peril.

Paradiso Insurance has a few pointers to share with the Connecticut community when it comes to insuring new gifts around the holidays:

#1: Consider a valuable articles insurance policy. A valuable articles policy can be added to a typical Connecticut homeowners insurance policy. It is designed to insure against additional risks (breakage and accidental damages). Typical items that can be covered under this rider include: antiques, fine furniture, musical instruments, jewelry, furs, fine rugs, sporting equipment, valuable collections and more.

#2: Ask about umbrella insurance. Those who have not considered an umbrella insurance policy before should do so now. An umbrella will protect new items or liabilities related to cars, pets and jewelry in the event that an individual’s pre-existing coverage limit is exhausted.

#3: Last but not least, update home inventory lists. It is important that Connecticut residents remember to update their home inventory lists around this time of year. It is much easier to add to it while receiving new items rather than going back years later and trying to remember the brand, serial numbers, and date of purchase. An effective home inventory list includes the following information: description of item, color, make, model, serial number, date purchased, etc. It is a good idea for owners to keep the receipts of expensive items, too.

Paradiso Insurance encourages residents of Connecticut to take care of insurance needs and home inventory lists as soon as possible. The sooner the tasks are completed, the safer your new gifts will be!
