Not only do they need to save their belongings and treasured possessions, but they have to do so under duress. That happens to be the business I'm in, and I want to help these people through this awful situation.

Sixty families were displaced Thursday morning, after a fire at the International Residence Apartments on Cooper Drive just off Highway 183 between Lake Creek Parkway and Anderson Mill Road. The blaze broke out shortly after 1 a.m., smoke billowing overhead waking residents.

Three buildings total were destroyed, up to seven other buildings have been damaged by smoke. That damage has forced many families to make hasty living arrangements during the holidays.

The Red Cross is helping residents who were forced to leave their homes, who were evacuated to the Northwest Fellowship church at 13427 Pond Springs Road in the early morning hours.

When the Pond Springs Self Storage location across the street heard that the victims were being helped across the street, owner Patrick Jones was inspired to use his local Austin Self Storage business to help.

"I can't imagine being basically homeless 5 days before Christmas. Many of these folks whose apartments survived, still won't have a home to go back to because of all the smoke damage. Not only do they need to save their belongings and treasured possessions, but they have to do so under duress. That happens to be the business I'm in, and I want to help these people through this awful situation."
