This weekend, the weekend before Christmas, is National Holiday Lifesavers Weekend and it kicks off with “Lights on for Life” Day on Friday. The Portland personal injury lawyers of Shulman DuBois LLC have created a list of tips to help keep drivers safe during these wet, dark days of holiday driving.

National “Lights on for Life” Day asks drivers to keep their headlights on all day as a reminder to drive safe and as a way to remember those who have lost their lives in previous drunk driving accidents.

National “Lights on for Life” Day asks drivers to keep their headlights on all day as a reminder to drive safe and as a way to remember those who have lost their lives in previous drunk driving accidents. To promote the event, the Portland injury lawyers of Shulman DuBois LLC wrote a quick guide to avoiding impaired driving.

“December is Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness month,” said Portland accident attorney Sean DuBois, “and we want to make sure all our friends and family are safe on the roads.”

In Oregon, according to an Oregon State Police news release, law enforcement will be working overtime to ensure that impaired drivers are kept off the roads or cited. Across the state, their ads will state, “Driver Sober – Or Get Pulled Over.”

In 2011, according to ODOT statistics, there were 25 motor vehicle deaths in Oregon in December – 7 of which were alcohol-related. Last year, on the weekend before Christmas, there were 2 deaths and both were alcohol-related, which is why Lights on for Life has become an important annual event to bring awareness to Oregon drivers.

“Personally, I have seen the horrible aftermath of drunk driving accidents. Several of my clients have sustained severe injuries from drunk drivers. And it’s not just the injury victims who suffer – their families also have to deal with the consequences,” DuBois said. DuBois is an experienced Portland injury lawyer who specializes in drunk driving accidents and has secured several settlements against impaired drivers in 2012.

Oregon has also seen an increase in pedestrian accident deaths in 2012. So far (as of 11/26/12), there have been 55 pedestrian deaths in the state, as compared to 47 in 2011. The Lights on for Life event has been combined with the “See and Be Seen” campaign by ODOT to ensure pedestrian safety.

Tips to Prevent Car Accidents During the Holiday Weekend:

  • Do not drink and drive (obviously) but also do not ride as a passenger with anyone who has been drinking.
  • When entering areas of high pedestrian traffic, slow way down.
  • Drive defensively always.
  • If you are on medications or prescriptions, be aware of how this could affect your driving – and how it can be affected by any alcohol consumption.
  • Make sure there is a designated driver BEFORE going to any events.
  • Use public transportation! Portland has a great transit system, and this is the perfect time to use it.
  • Use a taxi – the cost will be a lot higher if you hurt someone.
  • If walking or riding a bike, wear reflective clothing.
  • Provide non-alcoholic beverages to guests at your parties. Serve lots of water.
  • Avoid driving after midnight.
  • Always wear a seat belt.
  • If you know someone has been drinking, don’t let them drive. Hide their keys.

Tips to Detect Drunk Driving on the Roads:
If you see any of these signs in a driver (whether in another car or with your own driver), the driver could be impaired.

  • Weaving, swerving, drifting out of the lane.
  • Driving very slowly or very quickly –or both erratically.
  • Stopping without cause.
  • Responding slowly to traffic signals.
  • Making abrupt turns. Making illegal turns.
  • Narrowly avoiding collisions with objects or other vehicles.
  • Making wide turns.
  • Driving with headlights off.

You can report drunk drivers by calling 1-800-24DRUNK (800-243-7865) or dialing 9-1-1.
