Scientists and researchers are often quoted in considering solar power as the Holy Grail of Energy – clean, renewable and most of all, climate-friendly. As a fossil-fuel civilization, utilization of solar energy gives a promising answer to the world’s dwindling energy reserves. In the book Solar, author Aluschka van Heerden recognizes this potential and shares a comprehensive guide as to how this type of power works.
The first in its series, Solar discusses energy technologies and its irreplaceable contribution to society. As an easy-to-follow study guide, it includes discussions, examples and explanations that will broaden one’s knowledge and perspective of the true amount of power the technology holds in its hands. Specifically, the book tackles topics dealing with how solar panels work and how to create design systems based on individual requirements.
Several chapters also provide instructions on how to establish the correct size charge controller, how battery designs can be created based on the requirements asked for, how to determine the size of the inverters needed, and how it simply works. One of the chapters extensively covers battery chargers and related information. Readers will also come across realistic energy saving tips and information on freezers, solar geysers, solar refrigeration and solar pumps. Climate change and its impact to the environment are also included in the later chapters of the book.
The whole book is presented in an organized sequence with applied everyday examples to improve understanding of the subject. With Solar, Heerden brings theory and practice closer together, elucidating common misconceptions regarding solar energy technologies.
