Specialist tour operator Simpson Travel reveals the winners of their first ever photography competition this week. Between February and November 2012, guests were invited to take part in the competition by uploading pictures of memorable moments captured on holiday. A brief synopsis explaining the memory behind the photograph was also required and entries were judged on content, quality and originality. More than 200 entries were received from across Simpson’s destinations depicting a variety of holiday memories including fun and entertaining family moments, colourful shots taken from creative angles and unassuming photographs depicting holiday relaxation at its best. From a shortlist of favourites voted for by the general public, a panel of industry experts chose the winners. Rebecca Royle scooped first prize for her memory of sunset kayaking on Patara Beach in Turkey:
“Sunset kayaking. Sounds romantic doesn’t it? ‘You’re not rowing in time’, says my husband, as I look at him with loving eyes, whilst imagining burrowing my paddle into the back of his head. Ahh, the clear waters, the sound of birds. A peaceful scene, interspersed only with ‘paddle woman’, ‘we’re going in circles’ and ‘am I really married to a person with such little co-ordination?’ Our reward for avoiding spousal battery was a BBQ on Patara Beach. Our guide had drunk all the beer and we were served BBQ off a jeep bonnet. Sometimes beautiful sunsets and laughter make wonderful memories.”
The judging panel consisted of travel journalist and novelist Elizabeth Speller, professional photographer Robert Allen, and Graham Simpson, founder of Simpson Travel. They chose Rebecca Royle’s sunset kayaking on Patara Beach as the winning entry, followed by David Griffiths’ photograph of his daughter mesmerised by the murals on the ceiling of a monastery in Corfu and Kevin Phillips’ cheerful take on Greek entrepreneurialism as the two runners-up. Rebecca wins the top prize of a week’s holiday including flights, transfers and accommodation to any Simpson hotel or villa in 2013.
“The quality of the shortlisted entries was exceptional and it was certainly difficult selecting the winners. But the three finalists selected depicted not only stunning imagery but complemented that with a captivating story, which is what the competition was about” says Graham Simpson. “We very much look forward to welcoming all three on their prize winning Simpson holidays in 2013.”
