According to recent reports, world-renowned soccer coach Tito Vilanova of Barcelona will undergo parotid gland surgery this week as a result of reoccurring cancer. Vilanova’s surgery will be followed by a brief hospital stay, as well as several weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. At La Peer Health System’s in Los Angeles, world renowned parotid gland surgeon Babak Larian, MD, FACS, believes having a facial nerve specialist in the operating room is of the utmost importance.
“Performing parotid gland surgery requires the knowledge of not only an experienced head and neck surgeon, but also a doctor with expertise in the facial nerve anatomy. The facial nerve runs through the parotid gland, and if damaged, can cause severe facial paralysis for the patient,” said Dr. Larian.
In 2011, Vilanova underwent surgery for the removal of a tumor in his parotid gland. Following the procedure, the coach was pronounced cancer free. Though a relapse of parotid gland cancer is rare, when detected early and brought to the attention of an experienced parotid gland surgeon, parotid cancer has a generally high success rate and can be easily treated through surgical methods. At La Peer Health Systems in Los Angeles, Dr. Larian and Dr. Azizzadeh work together to ensure safety of the facial nerve while removing parotid gland tumors.
“It’s extremely important that Tito receive adequate medical care from both a facial paralysis surgeon and parotid gland surgeon. This is the best way to assure that parotid tumor removal surgery goes smoothly and without complications,” said Dr. Azizzadeh.
Dr. Azizzadeh is trained in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery as well as Head & Neck Surgery, giving him a distinctive insight into facial nerve function and facial aesthetics, an extremely important factor in the performance of parotid gland surgery. Alongside Dr. Larian, experienced parotid gland surgeon, the two bring patients optimal results through their years of expertise in working together to promote excellent patient care and successful treatments.
“Parotid gland tumor removal is really a combination surgery that requires two experts. Dr. Larian performs the parotid tumor removal, while I locate the facial nerve and monitor it’s function throughout the procedure, as well as perform any facial reconstruction necessary,” said Dr. Azizzadeh.
Following Vilanova’s procedure, he is expected to make a full recovery and return to coaching as soon as he receives medical clearance.
