December 27, 2012 -- U.S. families are eating at home more often than not these days, which could explain why recipes and creative cooking tips are noticeably up on sites like Marble Media’s RecipeIdol.com. According to a recent study from The NPD Group, a leading market research company, recipe demand is up five percent over last year.

The study reveals that U.S. families are no longer dining out frequently. Instead they are sticking closer to home, the result of a weak economy and an increasing desire to eat and feed their families healthier, more balanced meals. The study reports recipe usage has increased in 42 percent of American households this year.

According to the NPD Group’s findings, two-thirds of the country’s homemakers (67 percent) report using a recipe within the past month, and two in five (42 percent) use recipes two or more times per month. The study, entitled "Recipes are Cooking!" also found that almost 38 million U.S. households have used a recipe while preparing dinner in the past week.

On a typical evening, 11 million households reported using a recipe to cook dinner.
The study shows that growth in recipe usage is driven primarily by young adults. In fact, it states that almost 30 million young adults ages 18-29 are using recipes to plan and cook their meals at least once a week. Almost 25 million Generation Xers – adults now in their 30s and 40s – reported using recipes once or more per week. Families with children under 18 are also reported to be frequent recipe users.
