Pasadena, CA (December 29, 2012)- The National Restaurant Association recently released its 2013 Restaurant Industry Forecast, predicting that restaurant employment will outstrip overall employment for the 14th straight year. Strong gains in the restaurant industry are reflected in jobs data on ChefCrossing.com
The National Restaurant Association’s 2013 Restaurant Industry Forecast included economic projections for both the future of the industry as well as current restaurant industry, workforce, and consumer trends. Among the highlights, the report noted that restaurant industry sales are expected to increase 3.8 percent in 2013, or over $660 billion, and that 2013 restaurant employment is forecast to outpace overall employment for the 14th consecutive year. Nearly 1.3 million new jobs are expected to be added in the next decade, with restaurant employment reaching 14.4 million by 2023. The report noted that restaurants continue to be the second-largest private-sector employer in the United States.
The service industry has shown strong gains in recent months, reflected in the number of restaurant industry openings on ChefCrossing.com, a leading job site for restaurant and service sector job-seekers. As of December 26, the job site listed 9,518 chef jobs. In the overall food service industry, hiring was even stronger, with 30,361 positions available. The majority of the openings were for higher management-level positions in travel and hospitality, with 803 openings for executive chef jobs and 302 openings for chef manager jobs. However, there has been plenty of demand for chefs and cooks with specialized skills and training, such those with a background in pastry-making or baking. ChefCrossing.com found 345 chef baker jobs, 152 openings for pastry chef jobs, and 242 openings for culinary chef jobs.

Much of the concern regarding children’s nutrition has come on the heels of recent studies linking childhood obesity with adult health problems, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
